Updated billboard


Statement of aims

My brief is to create an audio visual cross-media production for a new television programme in a factual or fictional genre, along with this I have to create either an online functioning website to promote the program or a DVD or Blue-ray front and back cover for the box set and a billboard poster to promote the program.
I’m going to create an opening sequence to a political documentary about the EU referendum from the prospective of a young person, in this case a 17-year-old boy. It will be an expository documentary which covers a personal journey finding out how leaving the EU will affect people of his age group and why the older generations voted to leave. As the presenter was too young to vote and unable to influence the referendum, he wants to know why older people voted to leave but disregarded the opinions of the younger generation which will be most affected.
The production conforms to the expository documentary subgenre as it provides an objective presence where the filmmaker doesn’t appear in the program but their viewpoint is consistently reinforced.
The print task will be fairly minimalist with an EU and UK flag with the presenter torn between them, stuck between each flag, which is a scene in the opening sequence; It will also include the normal conventions of a box art with age rating, synopsis cast, title and production company logo. The billboard design will also follow the usual conventions of a billboard logo and dominant title the date of release, slogan and an eye-catching layout maybe showing a depiction of the god Atlas which could indicate the youth holding up the future.
The video will conform to the usual documentary conventions with interviews and a montage of shots of what’s coming up, sadly I am unable to use real archive footage for this which is a usual convention. I will use a variety of angles to show the narrative. However, due to the nature of the program it will have editing with medium length takes. The production will have a presenter who is also the narrator to move the program along and to portray the narrative as it his adventure and experience.
My production will fit with the Mise-en-scene of a documentary with an establishing shot of the castle showing where we are due to the castle being a symbol of Norwich.
It will also contain non-diegetic and diegetic sound for example the audio from the camera during the interview is diegetic while the audio dubbed over and the music added is non-diegetic.
The interview will consist of shot reserves shot techniques to show the presenter and the host to follow the narrative. They will be medium shots with a stationary camera.
My target audience is reformers aged 39-49 with the class of B, C1 due to the nature of the program and the needing of more of an educated demographic.
The program will be exhibited though digital convergence due to the platform it will be posted on in this case Channel 4 which has its own online streaming and catch up service all 4. This will allow the product to be viewed on TV but also smart devices like tablets phones or computers. 
The production company I have decided to use is Red productions which tends to have a left-wing bias and supports independent film and television.

5th edit

Changes were made to the shot including the flags and changes to audio during the Karen Davis interview which was re recorded. The flag scene was done by making the flags in photoshop and importing them into Sony Vegas. From there I key framed the layers to move in and out I also did this with the UK/EU flag split at the beginning of the introduction.

This is not the final edit as I'm still waiting for the email audio to be re done.
This edit just includes some changes to the music so the dubbing is easier to hear and some changes to the text for example the companies leaving scene which was changed to be easier to read.

Third edit

In this edit non digetic sound has been added like the music which has been added and the audio for the coins and the door closing.
The interview was changed to make more sense the the shot of the email interview was cut and re filmed. Different footage was also used for the ending this time using shots of Connor leaving the house and studying.
The video of the outside of the school was cut and replaced with a still photo along with a photo of a building site to show urban development.
The shot of the arts college was extended and synchronized up better
Certain parts of the audio were cut like Connor saying "now onto today's host "

Second edit

The test footage has been replaced with the final footage fixing lighting and sound issues, certain transitions have been changed and a chunk has been edited out due to it not being significant enough. The Karen Davis email has been put in along with another bit to bring a 3rd character into it. The scene in front of city council and Broadland district council has been edited out and replaced with shots of housing in those areas. This edit is still missing the dubbing for the housing scenes and some possible music on top.

influence for my billboard poster

To create enigma and to use semiotics for my billboard poster, I took influence from the Greek God Atlas who is shown holding up the earth this fits in with the billboard as the main character will be holder up the word BREXIT showing that they must carry it forward.

updated script

Script: 
[Text shots of youth insider] “In today's episode of youth insider we are finding out the [Shot of EU and UK flag torn apart] opinion of Brexit from [panning shot of Harry] young people in Norwich [Shot of castle, cathedral, panning shot of Norwich]  home to Norwich cathedral, Norwich castle and much more now Onto today’s host. 
Interviewer: [Shot of walking to camera] “Hi I’m Harry and I’m a 17-year-old and I’m here to take you on my adventure on something which will affect the rest of my life. 
[Shot against fence] You might be wondering what that is, it’s  
something you have probably had a neck full of in the last few  
months  Brexit. (Text zooms in with Brexit in text) 
[Research shot] You might be wondering why a 17-year-old  
boy is presenting a documentary on the EU referendum, 
[Shot of statistics research and who it will affect] well unlike some of the older generation this referendum will affect me the most. 51% of the country voted to leave the EU a small majority of 3% but with a staggering voter turnout of 72% the highest the country has ever seen. But while 51% of the country voted to leave only 27% of people age 18-24 wanted to leave the EU this might be because    
[Shot researching effects of Brexit] We are the generation which will grow up with the effects of leaving the Eu like removal of EU funding for education(shot of school) and urban development programs (shot of riverside) to the threat of companies leaving but some of the main ones effecting our age group are 
[shot of Harry walking into a wall] not having the freedom of movement to  
[Shot of Harry in supermarket] increased tariffs on things like fresh food without being in a custom union. (Pound coins falling down) 
But are there benefits, the leave campaign emphasized freedom for trade agreements with other countries like [shot of USA and China flag swiped aside by EU flag] USA and China where currently the EU dictates trade, it also campaigned that we [putting money in money box] would save £350 million which could be spent on the NHS.       
[Shot of Harry walking away from Polling station] But unlike the generations above me I was too young to vote or influence it even though it will affect me the most.  
[Shot of fence] So today I will be finding out why the leave campaign won and  
[ Shot of city hall] how the inner city voted  
[Shot of Broadland council] to the outer suburbs and why both  
voted differently. 
[Shots of different housing from Norwich south and North, party flags and shots of office jobs] Was It down to the different professions of people living in these areas, or maybe it was down to the age groups of people living there, could the fact the Norwich South having a greater student population due to the UEA effect the vote or was it down to the greater office job population? Was Norwich North swayed to leave due to its older more middle-class voting base or was it all just down to the parties which control these constituencies. Chloe smith was a supporter of leaving the EU while Clive Lewis was a supporter of remaining.

Overall the production needs to be extended in length, I'm going do this by adding an extra introduction for the TV series at the begging and adding extra lines for the research part.  I am also going to get Harry to talk slower to extend his lines for example the clip of Harry is way to fast and needs to be slowed down. It will also be longer once the dubbing has been done so I can find out how long certain clips need to be like the research part which is dubbed. Finally the audio needs fixing in the scenes next to the castle due to background noise and wind noise the biggest problem for this is the shot of Harry walking towards the camera where the microphone is unable to pick harry up when he is a certain distance away.

Billboard poster similar products

Image result for phantom menace billboardThe Phantom Menace billboard shares similar conventions of a billboards with big bold text of the film and the release date to tell passers by when the film is going to be in cinema. It contains the main characters on the front stage. The billboard uses bright colours to attract passers by. It also has a bold slogan "see it on the big screen". It also has clear text with the typical star wars font with the large 3D logo to show it off as having 3D capability.

Image result for i daniel blake billboard I Daniel Blake has a different look to the other billboard instead showing reviews as the main stand point to the film attracting people to it due to it's good reviews. The poster also has a clear colour scheme with red and black which attracts the eye. The title looks like it's done in spray paint which is a forecast for the scene in the film where Daniel spray paints the side of the wall with his name. The main character is also in a power pose with is for power to the people. The billboard follows the general conventions as it has the release date to show passers by when the film will the coming out. The font is also easy to read which is good at catching someone who might be driving past.

DVD Cover similar products



I Daniel Blake follows the normal conventions of a DVD poster. It contains shots of different parts of the film on the back with a main center image on the front which represents the main part of the film and it's main characters. The poster contains block text with a blurb and the cast. The front cover contains the directors name and the screenplay directors name. It also has text above the title about the previous directors work to try and lure people in who might of seen that previous film. It also has the DVD logo and the distribution companies logo on it. The back contains a set of technical information about who its' produced by the companies in relation to it the age rating, what audio it uses, is it recyclable? The images lay out our main characters and gives a slight look into their situation to show us what it's going to be about without giving away the plot.
The positioning of Daniel in front of the mother and leaning towards her while carrying the shopping indicates a family figure. The family model of the father, mother, daughter and son indicates a wholesome feel while the children seem to be having fun. Daniel is also positioned in front of the mother and his taller than her to indicate that he is the main character of this film. It is also shown as being a documentary/ social realism film due to the fact of their clothing and where they are just in some back passage. The back cover shows the mother in distress with her children up against a tall bald man, the viewer wants to know why she is distress and that position, who is the tall man.
The program also uses share interest with the cover bringing up Ken Loachs previous film which was fairly popular. Due to the actors being fairly unknown the cover instead references Loach and his previous films to attract people, as his past films have been critically acclaimed.

It contains the name in big bold text the the episode number in Roman numerals. The front has the episode catch phrase describing what the film is going to be about. The front has the usual conventions with the main characters what  the film includes (pod-racing) it contains the name and franchise name with how the audio is done through THX and the production company Lucasarts with the distributor 20th century Fox. The back includes a blurb about the film, and the special features you get with the DVD with extra footage and behind the scenes. It also contains the companies which worked with Lucasarts and a image of one of the main shots. It also features the cast and some terms and conditions.
The front cover uses light around the main characters surrounded by dark which might indicate dark vs light which is a current theme in the star wars saga. Our main characters are placed in the middle with Qui Gon Jinn at the top acting like a father figure for the other cast who are significantly younger. The canter piece of the cover is also the blue lightsaber a known stable of Star Wars and known by most people due to it's presence in modern culture. The center piece is also the large bold text of STAR WARS which grabs the readers attention as majority of people know what Star Wars is and will probably watch is just because it's a Star Wars film. The subheading "The Phantom Menace" attracts people as they want to know what is the phantom menace is it a event of a person.
